Being Lutheran Podcast Episode #105 - More Baptism, Part 1

/

In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason continue their discussion on baptism by moving from the content in the Small Catechism and looking at some other issues that are addressed in the Large Catechism and elsewhere. One of the primary differences between Lutherans and other Protestants on the Sacraments is that the Sacraments are a primary matter of faith, whereas certain other Protestant denominations would view them as a secondary matter of faith. The Sacraments in the Lutheran tradition are a means of grace that are founded on the efficacy of God’s Word.

  1. Hello Gentlemen:
I am enjoying your series on Baptism. You are doing a fine job of explaining the Lutheran view. I am eager to hear how your understanding differs from LCMS and WELS. Hopefully this will be addressed in the next podcast. Keep up the good work!!!

    1. Mark,

      Thanks for listening!

I don’t think there is much, if any, difference in the theology of baptism from the AFLC to the LCMS and WELS. Certainly, because of the AFLC’s heritage of Norwegian Lutheran Pietism, we would have some who would (intentionally or not) downplay the Sacraments in favor of other teachings. But I know that there are threads like that in the LCMS as well (I’m less familiar with the WELS).

Where we will run into some real differences will be the doctrine of Communion, especially as it pertains to Closed Communion and whether or not grape juice is acceptable. We hope to cover those issues in detail when we take up the Lord’s Supper. We still have a few more episodes to go in the Baptism series, however.

    1. Rick,

Nope. I deleted all my social media accounts a couple of weeks ago, as I found myself spending way too much time on social media and was alarmed at how it was affecting my moods and my attention span.
