In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason conclude their discussion of the Third Petition of the Lord’s Prayer by doing a Bible study on Eph. 6:10-18. Spiritual Warfare is a misunderstood topic in American Christianity, but it is intimately connected to our prayer life, as we learn in Ephesians.
I hesitate to use the end of Acts 2 specifically as formula, however, I think we can learn much by way of example from the early Church. “So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer…and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need…And the Lord was adding to their number day by day those who were being saved.” The early Christians devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, fellowship (or the fellowship), sacramental worship (baptism and breaking of bread), PRAYER, and giving. The result was that the Lord added daily to their numbers. I believe we would do well to emulate the early church in like devotion. I don’t think we should do these things necessarily as a formula for growth. However, they were devoted; and the Lord added. So, I think it not wrong to be surprised that we don’t grow if we are not devoted. This does need to be balanced with “the Lord added.” I bristle at the idea that many will be lost if my prayer is not enough as I once heard a Baptism missionary suggest.
Well said!
