In this episode, Brett, Brian, and Jason discuss the Eighth Commandment as it is presented by Luther’s small and large catechisms. The Eighth Commandment is especially important in today’s day and age because it deals with protecting the reputation of your neighbor, something that is increasingly difficult with the propagation of social media.
Re confrontation. What happens all too often, is that when the brother doesn’t repent, and you go to two or three more, you are then accused of breaking the 8th commandment.
What do you do about someone who bullies and abuses in private but puts on a smooth public front? I feel so often that “putting the best construction” on such people ends up being something akin to “word faith” — speaking things that are not as though they are.
That’s a sticky situation. Probably the best thing you can do in that situation is attempt to catch them in the act so that the sin can be addressed.
